NPFL: Making the Super Six, our topmost priority – Stanley Eguma

Despite sitting 5th on the Nigeria Professional League group A abridged league table after seven games, head coach of Rivers United Stanley Eguma has started that his ambition this season is to strive hard and get an opportunity to play in the Super Six which will produce the champion of the 2018/2019 league season.

Rivers United have played seven games so far this season and sits on the 5th position, and eight points behind surprise table toppers MFM FC of Lagos who is on 18 points after eight games in the league.

Despite their distance from the top, Eguma believes that their ability to pick valuable points away from home will make it possible for them to fight for a top three position in group A. “First we want to make the Super six from there we take it on. It’s been a fair performance away even though we are expected to win our games away from home but at least a draw is not bad like we got in Benin.

I hope we can work harder, work more on the team technically and ensure that we get better results away at least to win a match. That’s what our target is.”

Despite their away form, the team has found it difficult to find their rhythm at home and the coach has insisted that they will keep working hard to improve. “It’s a different ball game. We’ll have to work even harder because we have been finding it a bit difficult playing at home. Maybe the players are playing under severe pressure at home, I think we’ll work on their psychic and also improve on our tactics especially on goal scoring.

Our problem is, we don’t score early in our home games which makes the boys get demoralized and frustration sets in then we begin to make mistakes. We will work on that and ensure we get better performances to win and compliment our efforts of the away points we pick.

To make the top six playoffs this season, Rivers United will have to finish in the top three positions in group A of the abridged league.
