Rangers know victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena will guarantee the league title, while Ikorodu City must win to keep alive their hopes of securing a continental ticket after an impressive campaign.
But beyond the team objectives, there is also an intense personal rivalry brewing between two of the league’s deadliest forwards.
Experienced Rangers striker Godwin Obaje moved back to the top of the NPFL scorers’ chart after scoring a brace in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance in Enugu.
The goals took his tally to 14 for the season, one ahead of Ikorodu City forward Joseph Arumala, who has scored 13 goals.
Obaje’s return to the summit of the scoring charts has added extra tension to what is already shaping up to be one of the biggest matches of the season.
The veteran striker is also chasing another milestone, sitting just one goal away from reaching 100 career goals in the Nigerian top flight.
Arumala, meanwhile, has been one of the revelations of the campaign for Ikorodu City, leading the club’s charge for a possible continental finish while keeping pace in the Golden Boot race.
The forward had briefly held the advantage before Obaje’s latest brace swung momentum back in Rangers’ favour.
While the league title and continental qualification remain the major prizes, the final day showdown in Lagos now carries another compelling subplot — the race to finish as the NPFL’s top scorer.
Every chance, every finish, and possibly every goal in Lagos could decide not only the destination of the trophy but also who ends the season as the league’s deadliest striker.
