Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has called on the Super Eagles to shake off the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and channel their focus toward a statement-making performance at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes collapsed on Sunday in Rabat after a dramatic 4–3 extra-time defeat to DR Congo, a result that ensured the three-time African champions will miss a second consecutive mundial. Despite the topsy-turvy nature of the contest, Shaibu commended the team’s effort, describing the outcome as “painful” but reflective of a committed group that fought to the end.

“The boys put in a strong performance, but they lost gallantly,” the former Edo State Deputy Governor said. “I knew they also wanted to go to the World Cup, but it was not meant to be.”
With the dust still settling, Shaibu urged both players and fans to turn the page and rally around the team ahead of AFCON, which kicks off next month. According to him, the continental tournament offers the perfect platform for redemption.
“I want to charge the boys to shift their focus to the upcoming African Cup of Nations and use the AFCON to appease Nigerians, fans, and supporters by winning their fourth title in Morocco,” he said.
The NIS boss also appealed to Nigerians not to withdraw their support, stressing that unity and encouragement will be vital as the team attempts to bounce back.
“It’s an understatement to say that we are all pained by the loss, but I want to ask Nigerians to move on and put this defeat behind us,” he added.
Shaibu’s remarks underline the national expectation for a strong response from the Eagles as they prepare to restore pride on the African stage.
