The Nigeria Aquatics Federation has celebrated another positive outing for Team Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Aquatics Championships in Oran, Algeria, as the country’s swimmers continued to impress on Day Three of the competition.
Nigeria added another medal to its growing tally through India Kate Brown, who produced a strong performance in the Girls’ 100m Butterfly to secure a bronze medal with a time of 1:05.73.

Her achievement further underlines the emergence of a promising new generation of Nigerian swimmers making their mark at continental level.
In the Senior Men’s 100m Butterfly final, Collins Ebinga narrowly missed out on another podium finish after placing fifth in a highly competitive race with a time of 54.92 seconds. Despite finishing outside the medals, his performance was viewed positively as part of his continued growth in elite competition.
With the latest result, Nigeria’s total medal count at the championships has now risen to three bronze medals, reinforcing the steady progress of the country’s swimming programme.
The Federation noted that the current achievements represent a major transformation in Nigerian aquatics compared to previous years, when the country rarely featured prominently on the African medal table.
According to the Federation, the turnaround has been driven by reforms and strategic investment under the leadership of Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade at the National Sports Commission.
Their efforts, alongside the work of the current Nigeria Aquatics Federation board, have contributed to significant milestones in recent years, including national records at the previous championships in Cairo and Nigeria’s breakthrough silver medal on the global stage.
The Federation also praised the athletes for their resilience and commitment while reaffirming its determination to continue building a stronger future for aquatic sports in Nigeria.
“The progress we are seeing today is the result of vision, structure, and consistent investment in athlete development,” the Federation stated.
With several events still to come in Oran, Team Nigeria remains optimistic about adding more medals before the championships conclude.
