Nigeria’s James Nnaji Shines Bright as NBA Draft Welcomes African Talents

Nigeria’s James Nnaji, a standout player hailing from Africa, has made his mark on the basketball world by being selected in the 2023 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft.

Released by State Farm, the draft featured 12 international players from eight different countries, and Nnaji was chosen as the 31st overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. This achievement solidifies his place as the fifth Nigerian player to be selected in the last five years.

Nnaji’s basketball journey began in 2016, and he quickly rose through the ranks, gaining valuable experience playing for FC Barcelona in both the ACB and EuroLeague. Notably, Nnaji had the opportunity to participate in the Giants of Africa camp in 2018, an organization founded by Masai Ujiri, Vice-Chairman and President of the Toronto Raptors, who shares the same Nigerian heritage.

The NBA has witnessed a remarkable surge in African representation, as highlighted by the opening-night rosters for the 2022-23 season. The record-tying number of five Nigerian players, along with 16 players from across the continent of Africa and over 50 players with African heritage, have made their mark in the league. The draft class of 2023 further adds to this trend, with seven players connected to Africa being selected.

Joining Nnaji in the draft class are other talented players from Africa. Mouhamed Gueye from Senegal, representing Washington State University, was chosen as the 39th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. Morocco’s Rayan Rupert, who played for the New Zealand Breakers, was selected 43rd overall by the Portland Trail Blazers. Sidy Cissoko, a player of Franco-Senegalese descent, was drafted from the NBA G League Ignite as the 44th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs. Lastly, Toumani Camara from Mali, who played for the University of Dayton, was chosen as the 52nd overall pick by the Phoenix Suns.

The NBA Draft 2023, held at Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, captivated fans worldwide, reaching 214 countries and territories in 32 languages. For Nnaji, this moment holds immense significance, as he reflects on his journey from Africa to the NBA. Expressing his excitement, he states, “For me, it’s a very special moment… It’s one of the most exciting moments of my life. I’m really excited to have this opportunity.” Nnaji’s success serves as an inspiration for aspiring basketball players across Africa and reinforces the growing presence of African talent in the global basketball arena.
