The Nigeria Aquatics Federation has praised Team Nigeria’s impressive start at the ongoing Africa Aquatics Championships in Oran, Algeria, as Nigerian athletes continue to make their presence felt on the continental stage.
Team Nigeria opened its medal campaign in encouraging fashion on Day One, with Collins Ebinga claiming a bronze medal in the men’s 100m butterfly after setting a new personal best time of 50.68 seconds. The performance further highlighted his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s rising swimming talents.
Nigeria added another bronze medal through India Kate Brown, strengthening the team’s early medal tally and underlining a positive start to the championships.
On Day Two, Team Nigeria maintained momentum with several strong qualification performances. Ebinga progressed to the final of the 50m butterfly, while Dorcas Oka secured qualification for the 100m breaststroke final, showcasing the country’s growing depth in aquatic sports.
In the 50m butterfly final, Ebinga narrowly missed another podium finish, placing fourth behind swimmers from Egypt and South Africa. Dorcas Oka also battled strongly in the 100m breaststroke final but finished outside the medal positions.
Despite narrowly missing out on additional medals, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation described the performances as a clear indication of progress and competitiveness at continental level.
“These performances demonstrate clear progress, with podium finishes, personal bests, and multiple final appearances signaling a positive trajectory for Nigerian aquatics,” the Federation stated.
The federation further commended the athletes for their resilience, discipline, and commitment throughout the competition.
With several events still remaining at the championships, Team Nigeria remains focused on adding to its medal tally while continuing to build momentum in Algeria.
The performances in Oran are increasingly being viewed as another encouraging step in Nigeria’s quest to strengthen its standing in African aquatic sports and develop a stronger presence on the international stage.
