Nigeria Heading For One Of Its Best Commonwealth Games Outings Ever – AFN

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has come out with a very bold prediction that the country is heading for one of its best Commonwealth Games outings in recent years, Sports247 reports.

Ahead of this year’s Games billed to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from late July into early August, many Nigerian athletes continue enacting remarkable results, thereby raising hope about the country’s medals prospects.

Nigerian athletes again recorded outstanding performances at various international venues last weekend, thereby further butressing expectations of blistering results during the upcoming national trials, which are just two weeks away.

With the impending trials expected to be more explosive than ever, AFN’s media committee chairman, Maxwell Kumoye has projected great results that would go on to further boost growing expectations of a huge medals haul for Nigeria at Glasgow 2026.

He reeled out names of top Nigerian athletes who are tipped to make hay in Glasgow – among whom are Tobi Amusan, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Enoch Adegoke, Chidera Ezeakor, Israel Okon, Favour Ashe, Samuel Ogazi and Ezekiel Nathaniel.

Others are Blessing Ogundiran, Rosemary Nwankwo, Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, Ella Onojuvwevwo and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who are all set to excel during the trials at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

Kumoye added in a press release, “As the countdown to the AFN National Trials continues, expectations are rising around a Nigerian team blessed with a blend of established stars and emerging talents.

“The National Sports Commission has set an ambitious target of winning at least 20 gold medals and top-five finish. Recent results suggest Team Nigeria has the talent and depth to challenge those objectives.

“If the current form is anything to go by, the athletics contingent of Team Nigeria could be poised for one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent history.”
