A top official of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Olusheye Adebowale has revealed that Ondo State capital, Akure was chosen to host a major competition for teams from the south-west because of the city’s growing interest for the sport.
Sports247 reports that Akure will come agog this Saturday and Sunday, when the Asiwaju Renewed Hope South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge takes centre stage at Democracy Park, where Adebowale believes the atmosphere will be electric.
He confirmed that 12 teams from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States will light up Akure for the competition organised by South West Basketball Zone of the NBBF, with support from Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The NBBF buff further revealed that organisers have introduced improvements to enhance the event and create huge opportunities for businesses, as the event will also feature music performances, comedy shows and fan engagement activities.
While assuring total excitement at the venue, Adebowale added that the contest will attract top players, coaches and fans from across the region, then expressed confidence that this year’s competition will be better than previous editions.
Adebowale, who is also the competition’s technical director, said with affirmation: “Akure was chosen as host city because of its growing interest in sports and basketball development. Democracy Park provides a vibrant atmosphere.
“It will bring the game closer to people and encourage community participation. Apart from the quality of basketball, the championship is aimed at strengthening community engagement and Akure offers the right environment for that.”
On his part, NBBF’s South West representative, Olumide Oyedeji said the event is another opportunity for basketball players to experience competitive action, while noting that the 3×3 format is now a global phenomenon.
Oyedeji also revealed that cash prizes will be won during the competition and further disclosed that all 12 teams will be accommodated, get daily feeding, supplied with jerseys and receive transportation subsidy.
