Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has explained reasons behind a directive that all male and female players as well as coaches invited to the under-18 national camp in Abuja must arrive with their international passports, yellow cards and birth certificates.
Sports247 reports that the explanation was provided by NBBF’s secretary-general, Mrs. Amina Amanchi, who pointed out that there was a need for unhindered and quick processing of travel plans for the 36 players – 15 boys and 21 girls – ahead of their trip to the 2026 FIBA U18 Afro Basket Championship.
Amanchi added that there would be no time to waste once the camp opened on Tuesday at Athletes High-Performance Centre, inside Package B of Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja; where the boys will be guided by Coach Michael Ikima, while Coach Akindele Peter handles the girls.
The scribe revealed further that the final selection of players who will make the trip will be determined strictly by performances in camp, as the coaches need to pick only the best for the championships, which are both scheduled to hold between August 4th and 15th in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
“Every invited player report with their passport, yellow card and birth certificate. There will be no exceptions and no late documentation. We owe it to the players and to the competition to arrive in Abidjan beyond reproach,” Amanchi stated.
Sports247 gathered further that the 2026 FIBA U18 Afro Basket is a 12-nation championship for boys and girls, which doubles as Africa’s qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Pardubice, Czechia.
Champions and runners-up in both categories will represent Africa at the global event, ahead of which Nigeria will line up against tough opposition that includes hosts Côte d’Ivoire and defending champions, Mali.
