A highly promising product from the once formidable squad of National Grassroots Dream Team in Surulere, Lagos, Innocent Azuonye is charting a new course and has set his mind on achieving a semi-final spot with his latest club.
Sports247 gathered that Azuonye, who previously played in Egypt for some years, is now one of the key midfielders at Fair-Havens FC, who will this Friday line out in the quarter-finals of Nathaniel Idowu Unity Cup at New Maracana Stadium in Olodi-Apapa area of Lagos.
As his side get set to tango Northern Lions FC, with kick-off fixed for 9am at the famous arena for grassroots football in Ajegunle, Azuonye stressed in a chat with Sports247 that Fair-Havens are good enough to carry the day and reach the semi-finals in grand style.
Azuonye added that his team, which has become a fans’ favourite at the arena due to their bright orange jerseys, have been boosted with strong performances and great goals in their first three matches, but quickly added that they are not getting carried away.
“We all know that each match will get tougher as we progress in the competition. That’s why we are giving this quarter-finals match our total focus. All of us are taking our training very seriously for this match.
“We are counting on our top striker and current highest goals scorer so far in the competition, Sodiq Olaitan Anifowoshe (Alfa), who now has six to his name. We will once again count on him in the quarter-finals,” the battling midfielder disclosed.
He then gave a detailed breakdown of Alfa’s goals that have boosted the team’s progress so far in the prestigious competition on the lush green astro-turf surface of the multi-pitch arena that used to be known as ‘Big Field.’
Azuonye wrote at length: “In our first leg match against Alvatos Football Academy, the first goal was scored by Sodiq Ibrahim Anifowoshe (Alfa) with jersey number 10 for our equaliser through a rebound. The assist was from Drammeh Sidiki Abdullah.
“Our second goal was also scored by Alfa, while the assist was through a set piece by Victor Chizaram Uzoma (Matter) from the left. Alfa also scored two goals in the second match with the first assist from Osigwe Geoffery Chibuzor and then by me with a long curved pass.
“Alfa also scored two goals in the knockout out round of 16 against Saint Petersburg FC. The first goal was with a low drive shot from my assist. Alfa also got the second goal after receiving a fine pass from Miracle Francis Livinus.”
Sports247 reports further that the haul of six goals for Sodiq Ibrahim Anifowoshe (aka Alfa), with a brace in each of Fair-Havens FC’s three matches so far, makes him a man to watch during Friday’s quarter-finals.
