In a landmark move to transform the future of Nigerian fencing, the Nigerian Fencing Federation (NFF) has appointed renowned Italian coach Riccardo Bardine as head coach of the national team ahead of the 2025 African Senior Fencing Championships, set to hold in Lagos from June 25 to 29.

This appointment signals the beginning of a new era for Nigerian fencing, as it comes under the umbrella of a four-year strategic partnership between the NFF and the Italian Fencing Federation.

The collaboration, described by insiders as “a game-changer,” aims to deliver technical advancement, coaching development, and long-term growth for the sport in the country.

Bardine, 39, brings with him a wealth of international experience. A certified fencing coach and a specialist in strength and conditioning, he also possesses expertise in Paralympic fencing—an asset that aligns with Nigeria’s growing focus on inclusive sports.

He is expected to arrive in Lagos in early June to kick-start a high-performance, two-week training camp, which will involve both elite fencers and local coaches.

The camp is part of a broader effort to bridge the performance gap between Nigeria and more established fencing nations.

“Coach Bardine’s arrival represents more than just a tactical upgrade; it’s a statement of intent.

We are investing in long-term development, and this partnership with Italy reflects our ambition to put Nigeria on the global fencing map.”

The partnership also includes knowledge-sharing programs, talent identification initiatives, and international exposure for Nigerian athletes.

With Lagos set to host the continental championship for the first time in over a decade, expectations are high for a breakthrough performance on home soil.

Coach Bardine also expressed enthusiasm about his new role:
“Nigeria has tremendous potential in fencing, and I am honored to be part of this exciting project. Together, we will build a team that not only competes but inspires.”

As the countdown begins to the African Senior Fencing Championships, all eyes will be on Bardine and his new team to see if this ambitious project will spark a fencing renaissance in Nigeria.
