“I Wanted to Play Basketball, But I Was Too Shy to Approach the Coach” — UNILAG Student Confidence George Shares Emotional Sports Journey

For many young people, the biggest obstacle to pursuing their sporting dreams is not always a lack of talent, opportunity or determination. Sometimes, it is simply finding the courage to take the first step.

That was part of the experience shared by Confidence George, a student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who opened up about her passion for sports and the personal struggle that initially prevented her from pursuing basketball.

Speaking on Inside Naija Sports on Sports247, George reflected on her journey from a young girl who enjoyed participating in school sporting activities to someone whose interest in basketball was held back by shyness.

Her love for sports began during her secondary school years, when inter-house competitions exposed her to volleyball, athletics and other sporting activities.

Interestingly, basketball was not her first love.

“The sport I know I really liked was volleyball. That was what I started with. Basketball was not the initial thing; it was volleyball. So, volleyball was something that I really liked,” George recalled.

For her, volleyball offered excitement, teamwork and the challenge of preventing the ball from touching the ground on her team’s side of the court.

She also participated in athletics, particularly long jump, remembering how her flexibility during her younger years made physical activities enjoyable.

But as her sporting interests developed, basketball gradually caught her attention.

She wanted to learn the game, become involved and explore what she could achieve on the court. Yet there was one challenge standing between her and that opportunity: the confidence to approach the coach.

George admitted that her shy personality sometimes made it difficult to take that important step, even though her interest in basketball remained strong.

Her experience reflects a struggle that many young Nigerians quietly face — having a genuine passion for something but finding it difficult to express themselves or seek the opportunities available to them.

While some young athletes confidently walk up to coaches and ask for a chance, others may need encouragement before taking that same step.

George’s story is also a reminder that sporting development goes beyond physical ability. Emotional support, mentorship and welcoming environments can be just as important in helping young people discover their potential.

Her journey highlights the value of school sports programmes, which give students opportunities to explore different disciplines before deciding where their interests truly lie.

From volleyball courts to athletics fields and her growing interest in basketball, George’s experience demonstrates that discovering a sporting passion does not always follow a straightforward path.

Sometimes, the dream is already there. What is missing is simply the courage to pursue it.

And for young people who recognise themselves in George’s experience, her story carries an important message: being shy does not mean you lack potential, and taking one small step could open the door to something much bigger.
