Ezinne Questions Chelle’s Dual Role Ahead of Nigeria’s U-23 Qualifiers

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers have sparked debate over how Eric Chelle can manage the Olympic Eagles while also handling the Super Eagles’ senior national team responsibilities.

The issue came up during a top-stories discussion between host Samuel Bamisebi and guest Ezinne Oti on Inside Naija Sports, where concerns were raised about the demands of preparing two national teams for important matches within the same international window.

Nigeria are scheduled to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in a two-legged U-23 AFCON qualifying tie, while the senior Super Eagles have their own AFCON qualifying fixtures against Tanzania.

The U-23 competition also carries added importance because it serves as Africa’s qualification pathway to the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Nigeria missed the last two Olympic football tournaments after winning bronze at Rio 2016.

During the discussion, attention turned to whether Chelle could adequately prepare both teams, given the tight schedule and the different demands of the assignments.

One concern raised was the importance of having a clear coaching arrangement that would allow both sides to prepare properly, rather than leaving either team at a disadvantage because of competing responsibilities.

The discussion also considered whether Chelle could rely on his assistants to handle the Olympic Eagles while he concentrates on the senior team, or whether a different arrangement would better serve Nigeria’s interests.

The debate comes at a critical period for Nigerian football, with qualification for the U-23 AFCON offering the country another opportunity to return to the Olympic men’s football tournament.

Chelle’s challenge will be to ensure that the preparations for both teams are properly coordinated, with the coaching structure and responsibilities clearly defined before the decisive fixtures.

As Nigeria look to secure progress in both competitions, the discussion highlights the need for careful planning and effective use of the technical crew to avoid compromising either campaign.
