Ghana captain Joseph Paul Amoah has issued a friendly but confident warning to Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike ahead of the men’s 200 metres final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, insisting he is determined to come out on top when the two rivals meet in Glasgow.

Amoah booked his place in the final after producing a blistering 20.24 seconds, equalling his season’s best to win Heat Two of the semi-finals in impressive fashion.
The performance confirmed the Ghanaian as one of the leading contenders for a medal and set up another eagerly anticipated showdown with Onwuzurike, whom he has faced on several occasions.
Speaking after his qualification, Amoah acknowledged the quality of the Nigerian sprinter but made it clear that his objective is victory.
“Udodi is a top athlete. We’ve raced against each other a couple of times, and I have a lot of respect for him, but I’d love to beat him in the final,” Amoah said.
The rivalry between the West African sprinters has added extra intrigue to the men’s 200m event, with both athletes among the continent’s fastest over the distance.
Onwuzurike will head into the final hoping to deliver another strong performance for Team Nigeria, while Amoah believes his semi-final display has given him the confidence to challenge for gold.
The final is expected to be one of the highlights of the athletics programme, with several leading Commonwealth sprinters in contention for the podium.
