Glasgow 2026: Tobi Amusan Arrives Team Nigeria Camp as Injury Forces Ese Brume Out of Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria has received a significant boost ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow following the arrival of world record holder Tobi Amusan at the team’s training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The reigning Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles champion joined the Nigerian contingent as preparations intensify for the Games, where she will be aiming to win a historic third consecutive gold medal in her signature event.

Amusan arrives in Scotland on the back of another outstanding season on the Diamond League circuit, having already secured qualification for the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels despite four meetings still remaining.

The 29-year-old also successfully defended her African title earlier this year in Ghana and has clocked a season’s best of 12.28 seconds on three occasions.

The Nigerian sprint hurdler will headline Team Nigeria’s athletics squad and is widely regarded as one of the country’s strongest medal hopes in Glasgow, where she is expected to face stiff competition from Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds and Kerrica Hill, South Africa’s Marione Fourie, England’s Emma Nwofor, Australia’s Michelle Jenneke, Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid and other top contenders.

However, Team Nigeria’s preparations have suffered a major setback with the withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume due to injury.

Brume, who won gold and set a Commonwealth Games record of 7.00 metres at the previous edition, will be unable to defend her title in Glasgow.

In response, Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the Nigerian squad and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump as the country seeks to maintain its proud tradition in the event.

Team Nigeria has been camping at the Aberdeen Sports Village since last week, with athletes intensifying preparations ahead of the Commonwealth Games, which begin later this month in Glasgow.

Amusan’s arrival is expected to further boost confidence within the camp as Nigeria targets another successful outing on the continental stage.
