New signing at SV Hamburg of Germany, Terem Moffi, has revealed what could be tagged as a very symbolic reaction by his father regarding his summer transfer to the German Bundesliga club, which he rated as a traditional team in all of Europe.
Sports247 reports that, although Moffi admitted that Hamburg have been out of the European spotlight in recent years, following their previous relagation to the second-tier in Germany, they are still noted as an outfit with rich history behind them.
The former Lorient and OGC Nice of France hitman, who played last season on loan at FC Porto of Portugal, pointed out that his dad was able to recognise Hamburg from the memory he had of following the club during his youth days.
His biggest memory of Hamburg dates back to when they tackled Liverpool of England twice in official European club competition, as they met in the two-legged 1977 European Super Cup and Moffi is now eager to help SVH return to their glory days of yore.
The 27-year-old Super Eagles’ fringe player, who is Hamburg’s seventh signing of the summer, said: “The coach was really convincing in our discussions. The location, with its fantastic fans, and the club’s overall direction also played a role in my decision.
“Though HSV played in the second division for a few years, the club is still a big name, all over the world. When I told my father about the interest, he immediately knew which club I meant and he was thrilled. For me, it was positively crazy. I’m all the happier now to be a part of the club’s history.”
Sports247 recalls that Moffi’s new club, which is officially known as Hamburger SV, won the European Champions Cup once, which they achieved when they beat Juventus of Italy 1-0 in Athens, Greece on May 25, 1983.
The winning goal was scored by Felix Magath in the 8th minute and they are one of only three German clubs to lift the trophy, alongside Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but Hamburg also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.
Hamburg played 1-1 at home with Liverpool on November 22, 1977, at the Volksparkstadion, but lost the second leg 6-0 on December 6, 1977, at Anfield, a match that had iconic England star, Kevin Keegan return to Merseyside to play against his former club shortly after joining SVH.
