Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has urged his teammates to give everything for Nigeria as they prepare to open their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.
Awoniyi returned to the national team as a late replacement for injured Victor Osimhen, ending an absence of almost two years from the Super Eagles. The Coventry City striker last featured for Nigeria in an AFCON qualifier against Libya in November 2024.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his return, Awoniyi insists the identity of the striker selected by Eric Chelle is secondary to Nigeria collecting maximum points.
“The focus will be to get the points and victory, which is the most important thing for the country,” Awoniyi said. “This is our country; we just have to give our all to get the victory no matter what.”
For the 29-year-old, returning to the Super Eagles remains particularly meaningful.
“It’s always an honour to be here. It’s always a great privilege,” he said. “For every player, representing your country is one of your dreams.”
Osimhen’s absence has opened competition for Nigeria’s central striking position, with Awoniyi joined by Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and newcomer George Ilenikhena. But Awoniyi believes whoever gets Chelle’s nod has the quality to deliver.
“Every striker that is here is able to do it, so whenever you are called upon, just be ready to give yourself to the country and deliver for the country,” he stressed.
Nigeria host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 5 p.m. The Super Eagles then travel to Bissau for Tuesday’s second qualifier against Guinea-Bissau.
Awoniyi also appealed for continued faith in the team, convinced the Super Eagles still have plenty to offer.
For the returning striker, however, everything begins with Friday’s assignment, answer the call, fight for the shirt and secure the three points.
