Cycling has received a major boost for its revival in Nigeria, following the introduction of a new long-distance race in Akwa Ibom State, where amateur and professional cyclists from across the country are scheduled to compete next month.
Sports247 reports that the race, which is officially tagged 2026 La Reine Cycling Marathon, is expected to commence on October 26th and run to November 1st in the state’s capital, Uyo.
Convener of the competition, Miss Maobong Umoh disclosed that the race is aimed at showcasing the immense potential of Nigerian youths in cycling as a sport and discovering new talents, while also highlighting Akwa Ibom State’s social values, beauty and tourism potential.
While revealing that the race is recognized by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) and Union Cycliste Internationale, Umoh added that the marathon will also demonstrate that women can champion world-class sports initiatives in the country.
Umoh further assured that the race, which is expected to feature professional elite men and women, amateur, junior, intermediate, veteran and fun-rider categories, will comply strictly with international cycling rules and standards.
“We are not just launching a marathon, but a movement that will redefine wellness and put Akwa Ibom on the global cycling map. Most importantly, the event is the first of its kind.
“The measures are designed to ensure safety of participants and other road users throughout the event,” added Umoh, who also expressed confidence that the marathon will revive the interest of Nigerians in cycling.
