Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has dismissed concerns over his readiness for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar, insisting he is fully fit and prepared to start if selected by head coach Eric Chelle.
The Chippa United shot-stopper has been Nigeria’s established first-choice goalkeeper in recent years, but increased competition from Maduka Okoye and Charlton Athletic’s Arthur Okonkwo has placed renewed attention on Chelle’s selection ahead of Friday’s encounter in Uyo.
Nwabali, however, insists there is no reason to question his condition.
“I’m in my best shape,” Nwabali said ahead of the Group L opener. “There is nothing to worry about.”
The goalkeeper also addressed perceptions surrounding his demeanour, stressing that his body language should not be interpreted as an indication that he is struggling physically or mentally.
“You shouldn’t mistake my body language for my form,” he said, maintaining that his approach to representing Nigeria has always remained professional.
For Nwabali, selection ultimately rests with Chelle, but he says he will be prepared if called upon to protect Nigeria’s goal against Madagascar.
“Whenever I’m called upon, I’m always professional about my job,” he added.
Nwabali established himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the Super Eagles’ run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, producing crucial saves and emerging as one of the standout performers of the campaign.
Competition for the position has since intensified. Okonkwo impressed after receiving his opportunity with the national team, while Udinese goalkeeper Okoye provides another experienced option.
That competition leaves Chelle with a decision to make, but Nwabali’s immediate message is that fitness should not be part of the debate.
Nigeria need a positive start against Madagascar before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
And whether Chelle retains his established number one or makes a change, Nwabali insists he is fit, focused and ready whenever Nigeria need him.
