Ella Onojuvwevwo, Onyah Favour Shine at NCAA East Prelims; Esther Elo Joseph Misses Out Narrowly

It was a thrilling day on the track at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds as Nigerian quartermilers made a strong impression in the women’s 400m, with Ella Onojuvwevwo and Onyah Favour punching their tickets to the NCAA Championships in Oregon.

Onojuvwevwo stole the spotlight with a commanding performance in her quarterfinal heat, clocking a Season’s Best (SB) of 50.99s to secure victory and automatic qualification.

The time stands as one of her most impressive runs this year, confirming her status as a serious contender heading into nationals.

Also rising to the occasion was Onyah Favour, who continued her consistent form by clocking 51.94s in her own quarterfinal heat.

Her solid display ensured she booked her place among the top competitors who will battle for glory at the NCAA Championships in Eugene.

However, it was heartbreak for Esther Elo Joseph, who narrowly missed qualification despite a commendable performance. Joseph ran a strong 52.01s, just shy of the qualifying mark, underlining the intense competition on display.

The performances by Onojuvwevwo and Favour not only highlight their personal development but also reflect the growing presence of Nigerian athletes in collegiate athletics in the United States.

All eyes will now turn to Oregon, where the duo will aim to make a statement on one of the biggest stages in U.S. collegiate track and field.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled to take place from June 5–8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
