Commonwealth Games Boost! Nigeria Aquatics Board Member Unveils Cash Rewards For Medal-Winning Swimmers

Nigerian swimmers heading to the 2026 Commonwealth Games have received a major morale boost after South-East Representative on the Board of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), Joseph Odobeatu Anayo, popularly known as Ojez, announced an attractive cash reward package for medal winners in Glasgow.

Under the incentive scheme, every Nigerian swimmer who wins a gold medal will receive $2,000, while silver medallists will earn $1,000 and bronze medallists will be rewarded with $500.

The initiative comes as Team Nigeria intensifies preparations for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

“Our swimmers deserve every encouragement as they prepare to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games. This reward is my way of motivating them to aim for the podium and make the nation proud,” Ojez said.

The businessman and sports philanthropist explained that the incentive is designed not only to reward success but also to inspire Nigerian athletes to strive for excellence on the international stage.

According to him, government efforts alone are not enough to sustain sports development, stressing that private individuals and corporate organisations must continue to support athletes through meaningful initiatives.

“This is not just about money; it is about inspiring our athletes to believe that their hard work and sacrifices are appreciated. Government cannot do it alone. The private sector must continue to partner with sports federations to create opportunities for our athletes to succeed,” he added.

Ojez has established a reputation as one of the leading private supporters of Nigerian aquatics. Earlier this year, he rewarded Collins Ebingha and India Brown with cash gifts after both swimmers won medals for Nigeria at the 17th African Swimming Championships in Oran, Algeria.

Beyond aquatics, Ojez has also contributed to the development of Nigerian sports through grassroots initiatives, particularly in table tennis, where he has supported several young athletes throughout their careers.

His latest announcement comes at a time when the National Sports Commission (NSC) continues to encourage greater private sector involvement in athlete development as Team Nigeria prepares for another major international competition in Glasgow.
