Team Nigeria captain and para powerlifting world record holder Folashade Oluwafemiayo has declared that Nigeria’s athletes have “no excuses” ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, insisting the level of preparation provided by the National Sports Commission (NSC) has given the team everything needed to succeed in Glasgow.

Oluwafemiayo, one of Nigeria’s most accomplished para-athletes, made the remarks as Team Nigeria concluded the final phase of its preparations in Aberdeen, Scotland, before travelling to Glasgow for the Games.
The multiple-time world champion and Paralympic gold medallist praised the quality of the training environment, describing it as one of the finest camps she has experienced during her distinguished career.
“We have no excuses because everything has been put in place for us. The facilities, equipment and welfare have been excellent, and now it’s our responsibility to make Nigeria proud,” Oluwafemiayo said.
The National Sports Commission has adopted an early preparation strategy for the Commonwealth Games, with athletes camping in Scotland weeks before the opening ceremony to acclimatise and fine-tune their performances.
Oluwafemiayo believes the improved planning and athlete welfare will have a positive impact on Team Nigeria’s overall performance.
“This is one of the best preparation camps I’ve been part of. We appreciate the support we’ve received, and we’re determined to repay that confidence with strong performances,” she added.
Nigeria heads into the Commonwealth Games aiming to build on its impressive outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country finished as Africa’s highest-ranked nation with 35 medals, including 12 gold medals.
As captain of Team Nigeria, Oluwafemiayo expressed confidence that the athletes are mentally and physically ready to compete against the Commonwealth’s best across multiple sports.
The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, with Team Nigeria expected to compete across several events as the country targets another successful outing on the international stage.
