Nigerian sprinter Chidera Ezeakor delivered a commanding performance in the men’s 100m heats at the ongoing African Athletics Championships 2026 in Accra, powering to victory in a blistering 10.38s.
Ezeakor produced a composed and technically sound run to outpace Ghana’s home favourite, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, in what was one of the most anticipated heat matchups of the opening rounds. Running in front of a lively home crowd, Saminu was expected to challenge strongly, but the Nigerian sprinter controlled the race from the start and never relinquished his advantage.

Exploding out of the blocks with sharp acceleration and maintaining excellent form through the drive phase, Ezeakor gradually pulled away over the final metres to seal a comfortable win. His time of 10.38s not only secured qualification to the next round but also sent an early warning to rivals in the sprint field.
The performance highlighted Ezeakor’s growing maturity on the continental stage, as he combined confidence with tactical discipline in a high-pressure environment. His ability to remain calm under the intensity of a home-supported opponent further underlined his rising status among Nigeria’s emerging sprint talents.
With qualification secured, attention now shifts to the next round, where the competition is expected to intensify as the field narrows and medal contenders begin to emerge. Coaches within the Nigerian camp will be encouraged by Ezeakor’s efficiency and energy conservation, key factors as the championship progresses.
Nigeria continues to strengthen its presence in sprint events at the championships, and Ezeakor’s early-round statement adds momentum to the nation’s pursuit of podium finishes in Accra.
