Joy Chima: “Government Support Will Help Us Win More Medals” After Accra Bronze Triumph

Nigeria’s Joy Chima delivered a commendable performance at the 15th African Armwrestling Championship in Accra, winning a bronze medal in the Senior Women’s 65kg category and securing qualification for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.

The achievement marks a major milestone in Chima’s sporting career, as she battled through a highly competitive field to earn a podium finish for Team Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with Sports247 following her success, the athlete expressed joy at accomplishing one of her biggest ambitions.

“I am happy to have fulfilled my plans to qualify for the All African Games in Cairo. It is a dream come true,” she said.

Chima also reflected on the challenges faced during her preparation, highlighting the sacrifices and limited support encountered on the road to continental success.

“It has been a difficult journey away from Ghana, training hard with lesser motivation. The government can do better to support armwrestling. This is a channel for more medals for the country in Cairo,” she added.

Beyond armwrestling, Chima is also an accomplished weightlifter who has represented Team Lagos in several national competitions, consistently contributing medals across different events. Her versatility and dedication continue to stand out within Nigeria’s sporting community.

The bronze medallist further acknowledged the people who have played key roles in her journey, particularly her mother and Samuel Jackson, President of the Nigerian Armwrestling Federation.

“My mum is an inspiration to the journey; she is my role model. I also really appreciate Samuel Jackson for the opportunity,” she stated.

Chima’s success adds to Nigeria’s growing medal tally at the championship and reinforces the country’s ambitions of making a strong impact at the African Games in Cairo.
