Calvin Bassey Gets Off The Mark For Ajax In Six-goal Thriller

Calvin Bassey has scored his first Ajax goal in the club’s 4-2 win over FC Volendam in the Eredivisie on Saturday, reports Sports247.ng. The Nigerian international scored Ajax’s second goal in the game with a header from close range.

Dusan Tadic opened the scoring for Ajax inside 17 minutes, scoring from the spot. Bassey doubled the lead in the 39th minute to register his first goal for the club. The centre-back scored with a header following a delightful cross from Steven Berghuis.

Brian Brobbey scored in the 64th minute to put the visitors up by 3-0 at the Kras Stadion. Volendam threatened to stage a comeback late in the game with goals from Lequincio Zeefuik (74′) and Carel Eiting (86′) giving the home team some lifeline.

Ajax substitute Davy Klaassen ended any chance of a comeback for Volendam with a goal with virtually the last kick of the game to make it 4-2 on the scoreboard.

The result keeps Ajax at the top of the Dutch league table for the time being at least. The defending champions are on 22 points after 9 matches. They have two points more than second placed AZ Alkmaar who have a game to play tomorrow.

Bassey, who joined Ajax in July from Rangers, has made 11 appearances for de Godenzonen. Seven of his appearances have been in the league, three in the Champions League, and one on his debut in the Dutch Super Cup.
