AWCON 2018: Rivalry renewed as AWCON semis kick off

One of the fiercest rivalries in African football will be renewed at the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) on Tuesday as Nigeria battle Cameroon in the latest installment of the ‘Grudge Game’.

Cameroon will start as favourites for the semi-final, which kicks off at 4.30pm Nigerian time, as they aim to edge closer to their dream of winning a first ever AWCON.

The Indomitable Lionesses face a Nigerian side brimming with confidence after recovering from a 1-0 defeat in their opening game against South Africa to reach the last four.

Super Falcona swept aside Zambia 4-0 before thumping Equatorial Guinea 6-0 to qualify for the semi-finals.

Forward Asisat Oshoala, who has spent the past two seasons in China, is on course to be the tournament top scorer following her superbly taken treble against the Nzalang Nacional.

Niheeiay also have one of the players of the tournament in their ranks, the speedy and skilful winger Francisca Ordega, who has provided two assists and scored two goals in the competition.

The semi-final showdown in Accra will be played out against the backdrop of painful defeat Nigeria meted out to Cameroon in the final of the competition in 2016.

Several matches between the two sides have entered folklore.

The winner of Tuesday’s semi-final will face either South Africa or Mali in the final.
