Agu believes regular international friendlies are essential if the Super Eagles are to build a cohesive squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level after missing qualification for the last two FIFA World Cups.
The former Nigeria goalkeeping coach said competitive friendly matches would provide head coach Eric Chelle with valuable opportunities to test tactical ideas, integrate new players and strengthen the team’s chemistry ahead of crucial qualifiers.
“The NFF should take advantage of every FIFA window by arranging quality international friendlies. The more the players play together, the stronger the team will become,” Agu said.
The former international noted that friendly matches also create opportunities for emerging players to adapt to the demands of international football without the pressure associated with competitive fixtures.
Agu dismissed concerns that the absence of a few established stars in friendly matches would negatively affect the team, insisting experienced players can easily reintegrate into the squad when required.
“Even when some regular players are unavailable, it’s an opportunity to assess other options. The experienced players already understand the system and can always fit back into the team,” he added.
Since taking charge of the Super Eagles, Chelle has emphasised the importance of building continuity within the squad, with several new faces earning opportunities alongside established internationals as Nigeria begins preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
With international football becoming increasingly competitive, Agu believes a consistent programme of high-level friendly matches will play an important role in helping the Super Eagles develop the cohesion and experience needed for future continental and global competitions.
