Aho’s ILT20 Breakthrough Marks New Dawn for Nigerian Cricket

Nigeria’s cricket fraternity is basking in one of its proudest moments yet as Yellow-Greens star Peter Aho completed a landmark move to the Dubai Capitals for Season 4 of the International League T20 (ILT20), cementing his rise as one of the country’s most influential exports in the sport.

Aho’s signing is more than a personal milestone; it is a statement of intent for Nigerian cricket. The right-arm medium-fast bowler, who stunned the world in 2021 with a record-breaking six wickets for five runs against Sierra Leone at the UNILAG Oval, becomes one of the first Nigerian players to secure a high-profile franchise opportunity in a major global T20 league.

Now preparing under the leadership of Sri Lankan star Dasun Shanaka, Aho told SportsDay from Dubai that the transition has been “smooth, welcoming, and inspiring,” crediting the Capitals’ management and facilities for making his integration seamless.

“It’s a fantastic experience so far,” he said. “Playing in a highly competitive league like the ILT20 is a huge opportunity to test myself, learn from top players, and showcase my talent on the global stage.”

Although his famous world-record bowling figures have since slipped to third on the all-time list, Aho’s impact continues to surge in other ways,  symbolizing Nigeria’s growing footprint in world cricket. His move signals a breakthrough moment for the country’s development pathway and reinforces the belief that Nigerian talents can break into elite cricket environments.

For Aho, the mission is simple and driven: make the most of the opportunity, grow his craft, and represent Nigeria with distinction.

“I’m focused on making this opportunity count, to make my family and my country proud,” he said.

As the defending champions gear up for another electrifying ILT20 season, Nigeria will be watching closely, not just for Aho’s performance, but for the broader doors his journey could open for the next generation of Yellow-Greens
