Africa’s Rugby Aspirations Soar At All-African Games: Insights From Coach Tolbert Onyango

In a thrilling start to the Rugby competition at the All-African Games, Uganda’s 7th side, under the guidance of Coach Tolbert Onyango, secured a resounding victory against Burkina Faso.

Speaking with Sports 247, Coach Onyango expressed cautious optimism ahead of their next challenge against Ghana, acknowledging the formidable performance displayed by the Ghanaian team against Tunisia.

“We’ve just beaten Burkina Faso in the game that was just finished. We are meeting Ghana next. It’s going to be a tough game. We’ve just seen Ghana putting away Tunisia with 40 points. So I’m expecting a tough game against Ghana.”

Coach Onyango also shared his insights on Africa’s sporting progress, emphasizing the enthusiasm and talent displayed by young athletes across various disciplines at the All-African Games.

“Africa is improving in terms of sports. A lot of young guys that we’ve seen in the village are enthusiastic. They’re different teams that have come in and putting on good performances.”

He highlighted the commendable efforts of Ugandan cricket and handball teams, showcasing remarkable performances despite not clinching victories.

Coach Onyango stressed the significance of the All-African Games in nurturing and discovering new talents across the continent.

“So the All-African games is good for us as a continent to first of all discover new athletes who are playing different disciplines.

And you never know. Maybe there are a couple of scouts here who can be able to pick them up in all these various disciplines that they’re taking part in.”

Regarding the frequency of the All-African Games, Coach Onyango advocated for more frequent editions to provide aspiring athletes with consistent opportunities to compete and showcase their skills.

“I think it should be every two years. Four years is a long time in an athlete’s time. If you’re very strong, maybe take part in two All-African games.

I would wish that it would be every two years. So that young talent can be able to have something to look forward to in the near future as opposed to waiting for four years.”

With Coach Tolbert Onyango’s insights, Africa’s sporting landscape continues to evolve, driven by the passion and determination of its athletes.
