Uganda Rugby Sevens Athlete, Norbert Okeny Sexton, Shares Optimism, Challenges

Norbert Okeny Sexton, an athlete with the Uganda Rugby Sevens team, reflected on the ongoing tournament and the prospects for rugby in Africa.

In an exclusive interview with Sports 247, When asked about the tournament and the platform it provides for showcasing talent, Okeny Sexton expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance so far, having won all three games.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and closing the first two days on a high note, with a keen eye on the upcoming matches.

“I think on our side it’s been a good day so far. In the tournament, we have won three games out of three. Looking forward to winning the next game today so that we close off the first two days on a high, then see how day three goes.”

Regarding the potential of rugby in Africa, Okeny Sexton highlighted the need for increased investment in facilities and resources to nurture talent effectively.

He emphasized that while there is abundant talent in Africa, the lack of investment and proper facilities poses significant challenges.

“I think rugby in Africa needs a lot of investment because there is talent, and all that is lacking is investment and facilities to see that they can nurture the talent.

The manpower is there because almost if you look at 80% of the athletes, especially in rugby, they are surviving on no greater set up of facilities.”

He underscored the importance of access to quality equipment and facilities for athletes to reach their full potential.

Despite the challenges, Okeny Sexton expressed optimism about the future of rugby in Africa, believing that with sufficient investment, the continent could emerge as a prominent player in the global rugby scene.

“I believe in the near future, if they can invest enough, Africa could be a bigger and better player when it comes to rugby.”
