AFCON24: Gernot Rohr Believes Super Eagles Can Be Favorites at AFCON Despite Challenges

Former Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, expresses his belief that the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, can be considered among the favourites in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite facing challenges, including injuries to key player

Rohr highlights the strengths of the Super Eagles, particularly their attacking prowess, stating that Nigeria has the best strikers in Africa.

He emphasizes the abundance of goal-scorers and quality wingers in the squad. According to Rohr, if the team can find a good balance with a solid defence and midfield, they have the potential to win the AFCON.

While acknowledging the competition from strong teams like Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, and Ivory Coast, Rohr believes that Nigeria can aim for at least reaching the last four, which would be a commendable achievement.

He recognizes the desire in Nigeria to win the tournament but points out the challenging nature of the competition.

Rohr notes the unfortunate injury to Victor Boniface but expresses confidence in the replacement, Terem Moffi, who has been performing well at Nice.

“You have Morocco, Algeria, you have Ivory Coast at home, also it’s dangerous. And I think one team can make a surprise.

I think Nigeria is, for me, able to go into the final. If everything is done well and if everything is okay with the players, no more injuries, now they lost Boniface, replaced by Moffi, who is a very good player, playing very well in Nice.”

He believes that if the team maintains a positive spirit, starts the tournament well, and avoids further injuries, they can have a successful AFCON campaign and bring home a medal.

“So I think they can do a good AFCON when the spirit is there when the start is good, so they should do it and bring home a medal.”

Rohr’s comments reflect optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances at the AFCON and a realistic assessment of the competitive landscape in African football.
