Adeleye Rallies to Opening-Day Win at ATP Challenger 50

Nigeria’s top-ranked tennis player, Daniel Adeleye, produced a spirited comeback to secure victory in his opening qualifying match at an ATP Challenger 50 event in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The 19-year-old battled from a set down to defeat France’s Elijah Sanogo 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) on Sunday at Court 1 of the Cofina Neemba complex, advancing to the second round of the qualifiers.

Adeleye will now face Algeria’s Hamza Reguig, currently ranked 849 in the world, in his next qualifying fixture.

The Nigerian youngster has maintained an active presence on the tour following his impressive showing in the Davis Cup World Group II play-offs earlier this year. Competing at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Adeleye played a decisive role in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

After Nigeria split the opening singles matches, Adeleye restored parity with a composed 6-2, 6-4 win over Abdulaziz Usmonjonov.

He later sealed the tie with another straight-sets victory, defeating Ilya Ignatov 6-3, 6-4 after Nigeria had taken the lead through a hard-fought doubles win by Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel.

That triumph ensured Nigeria’s qualification for the Davis Cup World Group II, where they are scheduled to face Morocco from September 18 to 20, 2026. However, Adeleye’s participation remains uncertain due to his ongoing commitments on the professional circuit.

The ATP Challenger Tour, regarded as the secondary tier of professional men’s tennis, continues to provide emerging talents like Adeleye a platform to gain ranking points and experience.

The 2026 calendar features 158 tournaments, with prize money ranging from $63,000 to $300,000.

Adeleye’s latest victory further underlines his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest tennis prospects.
