Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, insisting that the tournament is diminished whenever one of Africa’s football powerhouses is absent.
Speaking during a press conference reviewing the performances of African teams at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Motsepe described Nigeria as one of the continent’s most influential football nations and urged all stakeholders to ensure the Super Eagles return to the biggest stage in future editions.
The CAF boss acknowledged the impressive performances of Africa’s representatives at the tournament but admitted that Nigeria’s absence was deeply felt throughout the competition.
“A FIFA World Cup without Nigeria representing Africa is not complete. Nigeria is one of the great football nations on our continent and we want to see them back where they belong,” Motsepe said.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, have long been one of Africa’s most successful countries at the FIFA World Cup, making multiple appearances and becoming the first African nation to qualify for the Round of 16 on more than one occasion.
However, the Super Eagles failed to secure a place at the latest tournament, extending concerns over the country’s recent struggles in World Cup qualifying campaigns.
Motsepe stressed that restoring Nigeria’s place among the world’s elite will require collective effort from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), players, coaches and every stakeholder involved in the development of the game.
“Nigeria has done so much for African football over the years. A lot of work must be done to regain that prestige and ensure the country qualifies for future World Cups,” he added.
The South African football administrator reiterated CAF’s commitment to helping member associations strengthen football structures across the continent, while encouraging Nigeria to build on its rich football heritage.
Despite the disappointment of missing the global showpiece, the Super Eagles remain one of Africa’s most decorated national teams, having won three Africa Cup of Nations titles and produced generations of players who have excelled across Europe’s top leagues.
Motsepe believes the country’s football pedigree remains intact but insists sustained planning, stronger development structures and improved performances in qualification campaigns will be essential if Nigeria is to reclaim its place among the continent’s leading forces.
For millions of Nigerian football fans, the CAF president’s remarks echo a growing sentiment across Africa: the World Cup feels different without the Super Eagles, and restoring the country’s presence on football’s biggest stage has become a priority for the future.
