The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway on Thursday night with a breathtaking Opening Ceremony that blended Scotland’s rich heritage, cutting-edge technology and cultural diversity, as Team Nigeria proudly marched into the arena in stunning green and white attire, earning admiration as one of the standout delegations of the colourful parade.
Inside the packed OVO Hydro Arena, thousands of spectators erupted in applause as athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations made their entrance in a historic parade that, for the first time in Commonwealth Games history, featured both Para and non-Para athletes entering the arena before the ceremony unfolded.
For Nigeria, the moment was one of pride and purpose.
Sports247, on ground in Glasgow, observed Team Nigeria’s athletes receiving warm applause from spectators as they confidently paraded in their beautifully designed green-and-white outfits, reflecting the country’s national colours and vibrant identity. The delegation’s elegant appearance quickly became one of the talking points of the ceremony, with many fans applauding the team’s stylish presentation.
The spectacular ceremony began with a dramatic entrance by His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who appeared on stage through the iconic TARDIS from the long-running British television series Doctor Who. The audience was then treated to a vibrant celebration of Scottish culture featuring music, dance, digital storytelling and performances that showcased Glasgow’s industrial heritage and its reputation as a UNESCO City of Music.
As each participating nation presented its uniquely decorated Baton, the arena was transformed into a colourful living artwork symbolising the unity and diversity of the Commonwealth.
His Majesty King Charles III later declared the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially open, welcoming athletes and officials to Glasgow while encouraging the Commonwealth family to celebrate friendship, excellence and a shared commitment to a better future through sport.
For Team Nigeria, however, the ceremony marked more than a celebration.
It signalled the beginning of another chapter in one of Africa’s greatest Commonwealth Games stories.
Nigeria arrives in Glasgow with a 74-member athlete contingent competing across 10 sports, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para powerlifting, para athletics, judo, swimming, track cycling, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has set an ambitious target of 16 to 20 gold medals, believing the team possesses the quality and depth to challenge for honours throughout the Games.
Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1950, Nigeria has established itself as one of the competition’s most successful nations, winning 271 medals—82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze—through generations of outstanding athletes.
This year’s delegation combines experienced champions with exciting young talents expected to lead Nigeria’s medal charge.
Among the biggest names are world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi, sprinter Favour Ashe, shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, long jumper Prestina Ochonogor, triple jumper Ruth Usoro, weightlifting stars Rafiatu Lawal and Onome Didih, as well as para powerlifting icons Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Esther Nworgu and Roland Ezuruike.
Competition begins on Friday, with Team Nigeria opening its campaign in 3×3 Basketball, Boxing and Para Powerlifting, where the country’s first medal opportunities will be up for grabs.
As the lights dimmed inside the Hydro and fireworks illuminated the Glasgow skyline, one message echoed through the Nigerian camp:
The ceremony is over.
The competition begins.
And Team Nigeria is ready to write another memorable chapter in its proud Commonwealth Games history.
