‘Our Girls Were Anxious, Mexico Could Shoot From Anywhere!’ — Flamingos Coach Busari Reveals Tactical Masterstroke Behind World Cup Victory

Flamingos head coach Hakeem Busari has revealed how tactical discipline, patience and effective management of his players’ anxiety helped Nigeria overcome a dangerous Mexico side 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Sports247.ng reports.

Speaking after Thursday’s dramatic Round of 16 encounter in Morocco, Busari admitted that Mexico presented serious challenges, particularly with their technical ability, physical strength and willingness to shoot from different positions.

“We were able to look at what they have in terms of their game analysis and how to take the shape of the game,” Busari explained.

“They play their own brand of style as well, very tough on the ball. They want to shoot from anywhere, and they are skilful as well.”

The Nigerian tactician disclosed that his technical crew adopted a mid-block defensive approach to frustrate Mexico’s attacking movement and regain possession in dangerous areas.

“We got to play on the mid-block to be able to take the ball away from them,” he revealed.

However, Busari acknowledged that managing the emotions of his young players proved equally important, particularly as the pressure of knockout football threatened their composure.

“For their age, you must notice anxiety, you must notice a sort of panic because they don’t want to make mistakes,” he stated.

The coach explained that his instructions from the touchline focused on encouraging patience, calmness and better decision-making.

“We need to just give them patience, calmness, composure. Let’s get it right,” he added.

Nigeria’s first-half breakthrough through Oluebube Umejiaku provided the psychological advantage Busari believed his team needed before eventually securing victory.

The coach also emphasised concentration and collective defensive responsibility, warning that players must remain alert until the final whistle.

“When it is not over, it is not over,” Busari stressed.

With Venezuela awaiting in the quarter-finals, Busari believes maintaining discipline, confidence and tactical awareness will be crucial as Nigeria continue their pursuit of a historic World Cup triumph.
