“Football Is Football” — Eguavoen Embraces Super Falcons Challenge, Confident of Olympic Qualification Success

Super Falcons interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has expressed confidence in his ability to handle the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s women’s national team, insisting that his experience in football management and coaching has prepared him for the assignment despite the surprise surrounding his appointment.

Eguavoen, who will lead the Super Falcons against Comoros in Friday’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifier, acknowledged the reactions generated by his appointment but maintained that football coaching principles remain largely the same regardless of whether the team is male or female.

“Quite interesting, you know. Football is football. A lot of people were shocked and surprised that Eguavoen had to do the female team. Why not? It has to do with football,” he said.

The former Super Eagles captain admitted that the responsibility comes with its own challenges but believes his years of experience in football administration and coaching will help him navigate the demands of the role.

“It is very sensitive, but in my experience, working in football management as well and then coaching, I think it’s something I could handle,” Eguavoen explained.

He further revealed that working with Nigeria’s women’s national teams was not entirely new to him, having previously been involved with the Super Falcons and Flamingos, experiences he believes will prove valuable as he settles into his latest assignment.

Eguavoen also expressed confidence in the technical crew and wider backroom staff, stressing that their collective experience and support would be crucial to the team’s progress.

“With the help of the coaches around me, and if you can see, there are a whole lot of women as backroom staff, and with their help, I think we will scale through,” he stated.

The Super Falcons face Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Friday, October 9, with the return leg scheduled for October 13 as Nigeria begins its campaign to secure a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

“I’m enjoying it at the moment,” Eguavoen added.

For Eguavoen, the challenge may be different, but his confidence remains firm as he looks to combine experience, teamwork and collective effort to guide the Super Falcons towards Olympic qualification.
