“We Have Two Objectives” — Chelle Sets AFCON 2027, Olympic Qualification Targets as Russia Debutants Stake Claims

Super Eagles head coach Eric Sekou Chelle has identified qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as Nigeria’s two major objectives, revealing that the impressive performances of emerging players against Russia could earn them further international opportunities.

Chelle, whose experimental Super Eagles side fought back from 3-1 down to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw in Nizhny Novgorod, explained that the friendly provided an opportunity to assess younger players following difficulties securing the release of several established internationals.

“We have two objectives. The vision is like that: the AFCON 2027 and the Olympic Games,” Chelle said.

The Franco-Malian tactician disclosed that club commitments had complicated his original selection plans, forcing the technical crew to explore alternatives and provide opportunities for players from Nigeria’s Under-23 setup.

“We had a lot of problems bringing some players to the national team because the clubs didn’t want to let them go. So now we come with a big team of the Under-23,” he explained.

Nigeria’s youthful squad demonstrated resilience against Russia, with Kelechi Iheanacho opening the scoring before the hosts established a 3-1 advantage. Peter Edokpolor reduced the deficit in the 78th minute, while Akor Adams completed the comeback deep into stoppage time.

Chelle believes the performance has strengthened his options, with some of the newcomers potentially remaining in his plans for both the senior national team and the Olympic qualification campaign.

“After the game that they showed us, maybe some of them will come into the national team for the next FIFA window,” he stated.

The coach also revealed that preparations for the November international window would begin immediately, with a preliminary squad expected to be drawn up within ten days.

“I have ten days to make a pre-list for November, and we will see,” Chelle added.

Despite the encouraging performances against Russia, Chelle maintained that the bigger picture remains securing qualification for both competitions.

“We have two objectives: first, the AFCON, and second, qualification for the Olympic Games.”

For Chelle, the Russia friendly was more than an opportunity to experiment. It offered a glimpse of players who could become central to Nigeria’s rebuilding process and its ambitions on two major international stages.
