“They Came In and Made Their Mark” — Peter Ijeh Hails Super Eagles Debutants, Urges Chelle to Keep Introducing Fresh Talent

Former Nigeria international Peter Ijeh has praised the impressive performances of the Super Eagles’ new players against Russia, urging head coach Eric Chelle to sustain the integration of emerging talents into the national team.

Ijeh believes the newcomers justified their inclusion in the squad during Nigeria’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Russia, demonstrating qualities that could strengthen the team as it continues its rebuilding process.

“Very impressive performance, you know. First-time call-up and they made their mark,” Ijeh said.

“I believe that confidence alone will help them to progress to the next level of the game.”

The former striker described the introduction of fresh faces as a welcome development, arguing that Nigeria stands to benefit from creating greater competition and unpredictability within the squad.

“I think it’s a welcome development, trying new players,” he stated.

The former international also welcomed the decision to begin the transition now rather than delay the introduction of younger players until the team faces greater pressure in competitive matches.

Chelle handed nine players their senior international debuts in Tuesday’s friendly in Nizhny Novgorod. Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring before Russia fought back to lead 3-1, but debutant Peter Edokpolor struck in the 78th minute and Akor Adams equalised in stoppage time.

The comeback provided encouragement after Nigeria’s 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their previous outing and gave Chelle an opportunity to assess players outside his established squad.

For Ijeh, the performance showed why the coaching staff should continue expanding the pool of players available for national team selection.

He believes the confidence gained from competing against Russia will be particularly valuable to the newcomers as they seek to establish themselves at international level.

With the Super Eagles preparing for further competitive assignments, Ijeh wants the Russia friendly to mark the beginning of a sustained transition, rather than a one-off experiment with young players.
