Super Eagles’ head coach, Éric Sekou Chelle is charging his players to go all out for an away win on Tuesday, when they battle Guinea-Bissau in their second fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Sports247 reports.
While noting that the hosts must not be underrated, following their shock 2-0 win away to Tanzania on the same evening Nigeria struggled to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo, Chelle stressed that his target on Tuesday is to leave the stadium with three points.
However, the Franco-Malian tactician acknowledged that getting maximum points at September 24 Stadium will not come on a platter of gold, hence his charge to the Nigerian players to put in their best efforts and avoid taking their hosts for granted.
“We respect them because they are a strong team. They won away in Tanzania on Friday and will be confident playing on home ground. Our objective is to take the three points, and to do that, we have to be at our best to earn victory,” Chelle posited.
A preview by the communications department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) pointed out that Nigeria and Guinea Bissau have played four official matches at senior level, with the Super Eagles winning three of those encounters.
On January 19, 2022, at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Cameroon’s northern city of Garoua, Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong scored second-half goals to give Nigeria all three points against Guinea-Bissau in a Group D match of that year’s AFCON.
Following that victory, The Wild Dogs shocked Nigeria by a lone goal in a 2023 AFCON qualifier at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on March 24, 2023; but the Eagles won the reverse fixture by the same margin in Bissau with Moses Simon scoring from the penalty spot.
The following year, at the next AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, the Eagles pipped Guinea-Bissau’s Wild Dogs by a lone goal at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan to confirm Nigeria’s supremacy on current form and head-to-head results beftween both sides over the years.
