The Super Eagles have received a massive show of support from Nigerian soldiers on duty in Guinea-Bissau ahead of Tuesday’s outing in their second fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Sports247 reports that the players gained a symbolic boost to their confidence when the Nigerian soldiers turned up at the team’s official and only training session at September 24 Stadium in Bissau on Monday evening to physically lend support to the squad.
The Nigerian troops in Guinea-Bissau, who were led by Lieutenant-Colonel Afam Junior Chidi, took special delight in watching the players go through paces with the technical crew, after which they joined the large number of administrators present in a group photograph.
Eagles’ coach, Éric Sekou Chelle declared afterwards that the team will take nothing for granted when they confront Guinea-Bissau’s Wild Dogs in their Day 2 AFCON 2027 qualifying match 24 hours later at the same venue in Bissau.
“We respect them because they are a strong team – I have followed their progress over the years. They also won away in Tanzania on Friday and will be confident playing on home ground.
“Our objective is to take the three points and, to do that, we must approach the game with a strong mentality. We have to be at our best to earn victory,” Chelle said during the pre-match press conference.
Sports247 gathered further that a major challenge the Eagles will have to overcome on Tuesday is the poor state of the pitch, as the Eagles had their official training under a shower of rain, with all 24 invited players involved in the session.
