Nigeria’s Canice Abua continues to gain valuable experience on the Davis Cup stage despite still waiting for his first victory in the competition.
Sports247 reports that for the second consecutive tie, Abua has been handed the responsibility of opening Nigeria’s campaign, giving the young Nigerian another opportunity to test himself against international opposition.
Although the elusive first win remains out of reach, Abua continues to show signs of progress and is gaining important experience with every appearance.
His latest outing came against Morocco’s Karim Bennani in the opening rubber of Nigeria’s Davis Cup World Group II tie in Rabat.
Bennani, however, proved too strong on the day, securing a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory to hand Morocco the opening point and put the hosts ahead in the tie.
Despite the defeat, Abua’s continued involvement at this level provides him with valuable exposure as he looks to develop his game and eventually make the breakthrough on the Davis Cup stage.
For Nigeria, attention now turns to the second rubber, with Abubakar Yusuf taking to the court against Morocco’s Yassine Dlimi.
Yusuf is making his first-ever Davis Cup appearance and will have the opportunity to level the tie and keep Nigeria firmly in contention.
As the Rabat tie continues, Nigeria will be hoping the debutant can respond strongly and put the team back on level terms.
For Abua, the journey continues. The first Davis Cup victory may still be elusive, but each appearance offers another opportunity to learn, compete and take another step towards that breakthrough moment.
