Nigeria is making a powerful statement across the international sporting landscape this weekend, with the country breaking new ground in netball, making significant strides in tennis and continuing to consolidate its position in global chess.
From Nairobi to Samarkand and Rabat, Nigerian athletes are competing on major international stages, a development the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described as evidence of the renewed energy being injected into sports administration across the country.
For the first time, Nigeria is competing at the Africa Netball Cup and the Netball World Cup Sydney 2027 African Qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya, as the country’s women’s team begins its campaign at the continental championship running from September 19 to 26. Nigeria is among the 10 nations competing for continental honours and qualification opportunities for the 2027 Netball World Cup.
At the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Team Nigeria also emphatically opened its campaign, with both the Open and Women’s teams recording 4-0 victories in Round 1.
Also, Nigeria’s tennis team is currently in Rabat, Morocco, where it faces the host nation in the Davis Cup World Group II first-round tie on September 19 and 20.
Hon. Bukola Olopade described the developments across the three sports as evidence of a deliberate effort to broaden Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem beyond its traditional strengths.
“In one weekend, Nigeria is breaking new grounds in Tennis, Netball and consolidating in Chess at a global scale.”
“In the last one year, sports that had been abandoned for years have been given new vigor by the NSC, and more breadwinners have been created, and lots more are being created,” he said.
The simultaneous emergence of Nigeria on the netball stage, the strong opening of its chess teams in Samarkand and its return to the upper tiers of Davis Cup competition underline the expanding competitive opportunities available to Nigerian athletes.
For the NSC, Hon. Olopade concluded that the developments reinforce its broader objective of creating a sports ecosystem capable of producing elite performers, international recognition and sustainable opportunities for athletes across disciplines.
