There are strong indications that FIFA has given its backing to Nigeria’s proposed football reform process following a crucial meeting between the world football governing body and a Nigerian delegation led by National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko in Zurich.
The high-level delegation included NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, former NFF President Amaju Pinnick and Interim NFF General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme.
The meeting came days after Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee resigned amid growing calls for fundamental changes to the administration of Nigerian football.
The Nigerian delegation briefed FIFA on the leadership changes and presented the direction of the proposed reform process, with indications that FIFA is favourably disposed to the restructuring, provided all subsequent steps comply with its statutes and regulations.
The development could remove one of the biggest uncertainties surrounding Nigeria’s plans to overhaul its football administration.
The reform push followed a difficult period for the country’s national teams, with the Super Eagles failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons suffering the historic setback of missing the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu subsequently directed the National Sports Commission to begin a comprehensive reform process aimed at addressing the problems affecting Nigerian football.
Dikko has repeatedly stressed that the exercise must go beyond changing individuals and focus on repairing the system itself.
“The time has come for a new look in how we run football in the country,” Dikko said.
“Football is the number one sport in Nigeria, and anything that affects the emotions of millions of Nigerians needs to be addressed.”
NFF Congress members have also pledged their support for the proposed reforms, with stakeholders calling for improvements in governance, accountability, representation, domestic competitions and football development.
The Zurich engagement is therefore being viewed as a significant step, particularly because any restructuring of the NFF must take place within the framework of FIFA and CAF regulations.
With the meeting successfully concluded, attention will now shift to the detailed roadmap for the reforms and the structure that will oversee Nigerian football during the transition.
For a country desperate to restore its football fortunes, the signals coming out of Zurich could represent the beginning of the biggest shake-up in Nigerian football administration in years.
