Abeokuta Set for Continental Football Double as Rangers, Shooting Stars Adopt MKO Abiola Stadium

The MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State, is set to take centre stage in Nigerian football this season as both Rangers International and Shooting Stars prepare to use the venue for important domestic and continental fixtures.

Sports247 gathered that NPFL champions Rangers International will begin their title defence against Katsina United this weekend at the Abeokuta-based stadium.

The Flying Antelopes have also adopted the venue for their CAF Champions League campaign, with their traditional home ground, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, still undergoing renovation.

The decision provides Rangers with a temporary home as they balance the demands of defending their domestic title with their ambitions on the continental stage.

Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian top-flight club Shooting Stars Sports Club have confirmed the MKO Abiola Stadium as the venue for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round clash against Tunisian side CS Sfaxien.

The match is scheduled for September 5, with Shooting Stars securing the Abeokuta venue for their home leg as they prepare for their return to continental competition.

According to the club, necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure the fixture is hosted in accordance with CAF standards.

Shooting Stars’ return to continental football represents an important moment for the historic Ibadan-based club, and playing their home fixture in Abeokuta adds another dimension to the encounter.

The adoption of the MKO Abiola Stadium by two Nigerian clubs competing in CAF competitions further underlines the importance of the facility to the country’s football calendar.

With Rangers using the venue for both their NPFL title defence and CAF Champions League campaign, and Shooting Stars preparing to welcome CS Sfaxien in the Confederation Cup, Abeokuta is poised to become an important football hub in the coming weeks.

The development is also expected to provide Ogun State football supporters with an opportunity to witness high-level domestic and continental action at the iconic stadium.

For Rangers, attention first turns to Katsina United as the champions begin their quest to retain the NPFL crown. Shooting Stars, meanwhile, will continue preparations for their continental assignment, with further details regarding kick-off time and ticketing arrangements expected to be announced by the club.

From NPFL title defence to CAF continental battles, the MKO Abiola Stadium is ready to become the new home of Nigerian football action.
