Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade has called on Nigerians to unite behind the Super Falcons as the defending champions prepare to begin their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria heads into the tournament as Africa’s most successful women’s national team, having won a record 10 WAFCON titles, and will be aiming to retain the crown while also securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Olopade praised the commitment and professionalism of the players and coaching crew, revealing that the Commission has maintained close contact with the team throughout their preparations.
“We are fully behind the Super Falcons. I have remained in touch with the team, and we will continue to provide every necessary support to help them achieve their objectives,” Olopade said.
The NSC Director General stressed that the Commission is committed to creating an enabling environment for the players to succeed, describing the Super Falcons as one of Nigeria’s greatest sporting assets and a source of national pride.
“Our target is not just to qualify for the World Cup but also to successfully defend the WAFCON title. The players have our confidence, and we believe they can make the nation proud once again,” he added.
Olopade also appealed to football fans across the country to stand firmly behind the team throughout the tournament, insisting that their support could serve as an additional source of motivation for the players.
“The Super Falcons have consistently brought honour to Nigeria over the years. As one of the most successful national teams in world football, they deserve the support and encouragement of every Nigerian,” he said.
The Super Falcons open their title defence this weekend with high expectations as they seek an unprecedented 11th continental title, while continuing Nigeria’s long-standing dominance in African women’s football and booking a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
