Josiah Majekodunmi is one that is often omitted when the history of Nigerian sports is told, the names of modern-day champions often dominate the conversation.
Yet, decades before Nigeria became a Commonwealth Games powerhouse, one man laid the foundation for generations of athletes to dream bigger.
That pioneer was Josiah Olutunji Majekodunmi.
On a memorable day at the 1950 British Empire Games, now known as the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, Majekodunmi soared over the high jump bar to claim the silver medal, becoming the first Nigerian ever to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
More significantly, it was Nigeria’s first medal in any major international multi-sport competition, marking the beginning of the country’s rich sporting legacy on the global stage.
Majekodunmi’s remarkable achievement came at a time when Nigeria was still under British colonial rule, ten years before gaining independence.
His silver medal announced Nigeria’s arrival on the international sporting scene and inspired future generations of athletes to pursue excellence.
His journey to international success began much earlier. In 1947, he captained Abeokuta Grammar School to a historic victory in the prestigious Grier Cup, Nigeria’s foremost secondary school athletics competition. The triumph remains the school’s only Grier Cup title, highlighting his exceptional leadership and athletic talent from a young age.
Majekodunmi continued to represent Nigeria on the world stage, competing at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, where he finished ninth in the men’s high jump event against some of the world’s finest athletes.
His sporting legacy extended beyond his own career.
His daughter, Olawunmi Majekodunmi, went on to become one of Africa’s most celebrated table tennis players, dominating the continent throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Today, Team Nigeria boasts an impressive 236 Commonwealth Games medals—comprising 70 gold, 75 silver and 91 bronze medals—and ranks among the most successful nations in the competition’s history.
The country’s greatest campaign came at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where Nigeria won a record 12 gold medals and finished as Africa’s top-performing nation.
However, every medal won by Nigerian athletes from weightlifting and wrestling to athletics and para-sports can be traced back to the historic leap made by Josiah Majekodunmi in Auckland in 1950.
As Team Nigeria begins another Commonwealth Games campaign, the story of Majekodunmi serves as a powerful reminder that every great sporting journey starts with one courageous pioneer.
