Nigeria’s pursuit of Commonwealth Games glory will receive another major boost as six determined boxers prepare to fly the nation’s flag at the XXIII Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with one clear objective of winning gold for Team Nigeria.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has unveiled a balanced six-member squad made up of three male and three female boxers for the Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
Carrying the hopes of a nation with a proud boxing heritage, the athletes will step into the ring at the SEC Centre aiming to add another glorious chapter to Nigeria’s rich Commonwealth Games history.
Team Nigeria’s Boxing Squad
The women’s team features Ajoshola Kadijat (54kg), Blessing Orakwe (70kg) and Patricia Mbata (75kg), three talented fighters who have consistently impressed on both the domestic and continental circuits.
Leading the men’s challenge are Abdul-Wahab Abdul-Ramon (65kg), Hassan Folly (70kg) and Akintola David (80kg), a formidable trio expected to battle some of the Commonwealth’s finest amateur boxers.
The boxing competition begins with the preliminary rounds from July 24 to 27, followed by the quarter-finals on July 28 and 29. The semi-finals are scheduled for July 31, while the gold medal bouts will be contested on August 1 at the SEC Centre.
For the Nigerian contingent, every victory will bring them closer to the ultimate dream of standing atop the podium as the national anthem echoes through the arena.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation has set an ambitious target for the team, winning six gold medals and securing at least 10 medals overall, a goal that reflects the confidence in the quality of the squad.
Boxing has remained one of Nigeria’s most reliable medal-winning sports at the Commonwealth Games, alongside athletics, wrestling and weightlifting.
