Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba believes Stanley Nwabali’s return to Chippa United has come at the perfect time, insisting regular club football will be crucial if the shot-stopper is to retain his place as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Nwabali recently rejoined the South African Betway Premiership side after spending several months away from competitive action, ending speculation over his club future following his departure from the Eastern Cape outfit earlier this year.
Aiyenugba said the move gives the Super Eagles goalkeeper the platform to rebuild his confidence and sharpness ahead of Nigeria’s forthcoming international fixtures.
“For any goalkeeper, playing regularly is very important. Stanley Nwabali’s return to Chippa United gives him the opportunity to stay match-fit and strengthen his chances of remaining Nigeria’s number one,” Aiyenugba said.
The former Bnei Yehuda goalkeeper noted that consistency at club level has always been one of the key criteria for earning and retaining a place in the national team, particularly in such a specialised position.
Aiyenugba also welcomed the increasing competition among Nigeria’s goalkeepers, describing healthy rivalry as an important factor in raising standards within the Super Eagles.
“Competition is always good for the national team. During my playing days, we constantly challenged one another for places, and that helped everyone improve. It’s the same situation now, and it can only benefit the Super Eagles,” he added.
Nwabali established himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper after his outstanding performances during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a key role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final and attracted interest from clubs across Europe and Africa.
With the new club season approaching, Nwabali will now be aiming to secure regular minutes at Chippa United as he prepares for Nigeria’s upcoming international assignments under head coach Eric Chelle.
