Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba has backed Stanley Nwabali’s decision to return to Chippa United, describing the move as the best possible step for the Nigerian international after several months away from competitive football.
Nwabali recently rejoined the South African Betway Premiership club just five months after leaving by mutual consent, bringing an end to speculation over his future following unsuccessful attempts to secure a move elsewhere.

The 29-year-old had attracted interest from clubs in Europe, North Africa and South Africa after his outstanding performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but no permanent transfer materialised before he opted to return to the club where he established himself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers.

The former Bnei Yehuda goalkeeper admitted he was not fully aware of the circumstances surrounding Nwabali’s earlier departure from Chippa United but believes the familiarity between player and club will benefit both parties.
Aiyenugba added that regular first-team football will be crucial if Nwabali is to maintain his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of upcoming international assignments.
“Chippa United already know his qualities and what he can offer. Sometimes the most important thing for a goalkeeper is to play consistently, and this move gives him that opportunity again,” he added.
Nwabali became a household name after playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where his performances earned widespread praise and established him as the Super Eagles’ undisputed number one.
The goalkeeper is expected to begin pre-season preparations with Chippa United as he looks to re-establish himself at club level ahead of the new Betway Premiership season and Nigeria’s forthcoming international fixtures.
