Olajide Omotayo Exits WTT Contender Lagos After Round of 32 Defeat

Nigerian table tennis star Olajide Omotayo suffered an early exit at the WTT Contender Lagos 2026 after falling to South Korea’s Lim Jong-hoon in the Round of 32.

The Nigerian bowed out of the competition following defeat to the World No. 61 at the prestigious tournament currently taking place in Lagos.

Despite the early elimination, the outing still provided another valuable experience for the home favourite, who continues his gradual return to consistent international competition.

According to Sports247Naija, Omotayo qualified directly into the main draw of the WTT Contender Lagos, highlighting his standing and experience within African table tennis.

The 30-year-old Nigerian is making his third appearance on the WTT Series this season as he continues efforts to rebuild his form and improve his international ranking.

The tournament is being held from May 19 to 24 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, one of Nigeria’s major indoor sporting venues.

Although his campaign ended earlier than expected, Omotayo’s participation remains significant given the challenges he has faced over the past few years.

Back in April, the Nigerian table tennis star openly discussed the difficulties that affected both his performances and world ranking in recent seasons.

In an interview with The Punch Nigeria, Omotayo admitted that pressure and limited opportunities to compete internationally had slowed his development and consistency on the global stage.

However, the Nigerian also revealed that renewed support from Xuantie and management assistance from Vera Zhao have helped provide fresh motivation and improved opportunities to compete regularly again.

“I’m now able to compete regularly again, and that changes everything,” Omotayo said during the interview.

The experienced player remains determined to regain top form and continue representing Nigeria strongly on the international circuit.

With the WTT Contender Lagos now behind him, attention will shift toward his upcoming international engagements as he continues working toward climbing back up the global rankings.

Despite the disappointment of the Round of 32 exit, Omotayo’s presence at the event once again demonstrated his commitment to remaining competitive at the highest level of world table tennis while inspiring home supporters in Lagos.
